Our Initiatives

At The Source Matters Foundation, we believe that food is more than nourishment—it’s a catalyst for community renewal, economic opportunity, and human dignity. Through our Community Facility Development Plan, we’re building the foundation for long-term change in distressed Appalachian communities.

Building for Impact

Our vision is taking shape through a multi-use community facility designed to serve as a commercial kitchen, food packing hub, and workforce development center. This initiative not only supports local contractors and engineers but also lays the groundwork for a sustainable, resilient food economy in an ARC-designated distressed area.

Facility Construction

The new facility will be a state-of-the-art steel building segmented into:

  • Licensed and inspected Commercial Kitchen
  • Supplement Bottling & Sealing Room
  • Food Storage (dry and cold)
  • Education & Entrepreneurship Classroom
  • USDA-Compliant Meat Processing Wing

With ADA accessibility, HVAC zoning, commercial-grade finishes, and food safety design, this center will create opportunities for entrepreneurs, food manufacturers, and community health programs to thrive.

Equipping for the Future

We’re investing in industry-standard equipment and machinery to train residents in food production and processing, including:

  • Industrial stoves, ovens, mixers, blenders, and sealers
  • GMP-compliant bottling and labeling lines
  • Refrigeration units and walk-in coolers
  • USDA-approved meat grinders, smokers, and processing tools
  • Food-grade air handling systems

This hands-on training builds local skills in packaging, safety protocols, and manufacturing processes—skills that transfer directly into well-paying jobs.

Compliance & Certification

Our facility will meet rigorous standards from:

  • TN Dept. of Agriculture (Food Manufacturing License)
  • USDA FSIS (Meat Processing Inspection)
  • FDA (Food Facility Registration)
  • ADA, EPA, Fire Marshal, and County Zoning authorities

By reducing regulatory bottlenecks, we create a certified food corridor that local producers and entrepreneurs can access affordably.

Workforce Training & Job Creation

Through structured workforce programs, we provide:

  • Food Safety Certifications (HACCP, GMP, USDA)
  • Technical Skills in bottling, labeling, and equipment use
  • Entrepreneurship Tracks in business planning and distribution
  • Reentry Support for individuals in recovery, justice-involved, or low-income households

With partners like workforce boards, recovery programs, and technical colleges, we prepare Appalachians to re-enter the workforce, launch businesses, and strengthen their communities.

Outreach & Partnerships

We’re expanding our reach with:

  • Local job fairs and recruitment events
  • Outreach to farmers, co-ops, and underserved producers
  • The launch of “The Source Matters Certified” brand for trusted products
  • School tours and civic engagement opportunities

These efforts foster cross-county collaboration, resilience, and pride in local food systems.

Projected Community Outcomes

Our integrated model of food security, job creation, and community dignity will deliver:

  • 30+ permanent jobs within 3 years
  • 100+ trained individuals certified in food processing and safety
  • 20+ micro-entrepreneurs supported in year one
  • A stronger farm-to-retail ecosystem through aggregation, co-packing, and meat processing

A Replicable Model for Change

The Source Matters Foundation is proving that distressed communities can thrive when given the right tools. By uniting food, workforce training, and recovery-driven enterprises, we’re not just building a facility—we’re building a future of resilience, health, and opportunity for Appalachia.
